ON DEALING WITH CYCLIC VOMITING SYNDROME (CVS)

My son, Ric is a normal child, he will be in grade 6 this june and he is doing well in school in fact he had been promoted once , (2 grade level in one year ) Everything is okay with him except that he has been hospitalized 28 times as of this writing due to cyclic vomiting syndrome (cvs)and he is only 10 years old.

His sickness started at age 2 . When he was 6 years old, his pediatrician adviced us to bring him to a pedia gastro to check the cause of his vomiting which has an average of 3x hospitalization in a year and each confinement lasted for 1 day to 1 week..

Last 2013 we brought our son to the Philippine Childrens Medical Center in Quezon City and consulted Dra Nolasco, pedia gastro. We were advised to have a barrium enema at NKTI ,to check the anatomy of his intestine and rule out GERD . Thanks God it was clear..Ric has no acid reflux and his small intistine is okay.

The pedia gastro advise us then , to consult a neurologist. There was a findings called abdominal epilipsy. The EEG shows a single epiliptrum discharge , so Dr. Agrava of PCMC prescribed valporic acid for 2 years. After 2 annual EEG which are both clear, we were advised to stop the meds.

Simultaneous with the consultation with the pedia gastro, pedia neuro, we also consulted the pedia endocrinologist to clear out the growth hormones. And the result was okay.

This summer , we also consulted a psychologist to rule out if his vomiting is psychological in nature (stress related) because some of his confinement were during exam days in school. The test is ongoing. We will be back for the last test when the doctor is available.

As of this writing we are in the hospital . This is his 28th confinement . The trigger is tonsilites. Ric vomited 10x so we rush him to the hospital to prevent dehydration.

I hope we can find the preventive measure in vomiting, so that confinement will be avoided. The doctor would not prescribe meds to abort vomiting. may be its not safe to do so.

I’ll be writing more on Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome base on my experience as a mother of a patient, to promote awareness of this rare kind of disease. His doctor told us this illness can be outgrown, when? we do not know. This time the only thing we can do is avoid the triggers as much as we can. And prayers that all is well .

    1. Hello po. We consulted po a pediatric gastro enterologist sa Phil Childrens Medical Center.. Si Dra Nolasco, after series of test, sabi po nya walang deperensya sa tiyan. Ni recommend kami kay Dr. Agrava, pediatric neuro. Then nag EEG po and it turned out na may epelipsy yong anak ko. It is a rare kind of epelipsy na nagiging cause ng cyclic vomiting syndrome. He prescribed medicine called valporic acid for 2 yrs, follow up consultation every 3mos to see the side effects if any. Gradual yong pag galing ng anak ko. Though may iniinom na siyang gamot may attack pa rin. But thank God mag 3years na siyang walng attack. I claim na he is healed. Thanks God

    1. Hi ..thank you for reading my post. In cyclic vomiting , prevention is better than cure. Other times, pag naparami ang kain ng chocolate, and ice cream. Minsan naman pag na stress like pag malapit na exam.
