Growing Old Alone

One of my fears is growing old alone. By alone means, I am not surrounded by family members. In our culture where families are closely knit and putting the elderly in nursing home is frowned upon, I wish my children and my future grandchildren will take care of us when we can no longer take care of ourselves.

Last week, we had a charity work in one of the Home for the Aged in Sorsogon City, it saddened me to see these old men and women who in their prime years have taken care of their families, who spent all their earnings for the education of their children making sure their children had a good future, who sacrificed a lot for their families but now in their twilight years they let the institution take care of their parents. To think that this parents are not a financial burden to them, they have pensions and they can afford to hire household helper to take care of them. Why put them in the Home for the Aged.

They are pensioners, and their children are professionals and financially able. I’m sad.

A very simple facility, for sure the homes of these elderly are much better.
